WELCOME TO THE KOALA ALLIANCE

Official Website:

Founded in response to the urgent need for action, The Koala Alliance brings together wildlife rescuers, carers and advocates, who are frustrated by the lack of progress in protecting this iconic species. We recognize that the threats facing koalas far outweigh current efforts to save them, and we are committed to changing that.

Our dedicated working group collaborates to share knowledge, raise awareness, and develop strategies that drive meaningful change. By uniting groups, individuals, and organizations, we amplify our collective voice, working together to protect and preserve koalas for future generations.

CALL TO ACTION

Budj Bim

Frequently asked questions.

Take Action Now for Koalas!

The Koala Alliance is calling for an independent inquiry into the mass shooting of koalas at Budj Bim National Park. The government has yet to explain a lot about these killings. Recent evidence has also revealed that the fire did not impact 20% of the park, terrain was not difficult in many parts - all justifications for shooting koalas from helicopters. The public was never supposed to know. This complete lack of transparency and refusal to answer public questions raises serious ethical questions about how our native wildlife is managed.

We’ve launched an official Victorian parliamentary petition, sponsored by Georgie Purcell MP (Animal Justice Party). This petition needs 10,000 signatures to be debated in Parliament.

If you live in Victoria, please sign the official petition on our petition page. 📢 If you live elsewhere, you can still help by writing to the federal environment minister and the prime minister, or by signing our prewritten letter on the same page.

Victorians must demand transparency and ensure that this never happens again!

Our important goals

Lobbying for change

Why is this federal election vital for koalas?

Both major parties have failed in their duty of care to protect koalas and cannot be trusted to enact further change without pressure from the Greens, and Independent political candidates.

Koalas need a parliament where neither major party has more than half the seats and is therefore forced to work with the smaller parties and Independents in order to make decisions. This stops them being able to push through legislation that is harmful to the environment, and means a broader range of views are represented.

Ensuring that Independent, Greens and minor party candidates are well educated about the issues facing koalas and that they know koalas are important to their constituents will ensure koalas have a voice in the next federal government.

We plan to educate Independents, Greens and minor parties about the issues facing koalas, and grow support for the proposed actions.

Candidates will all be emailed a copy of our priority actions and a questionnaire to show their support (or not). We will use their responses to create a scorecard to help you make your vote count for koalas.

Koala Road Trauma Fatalities

The Koala Alliance recognizes that habitat destruction and fragmentation are the primary threats to koalas today.

The loss of their habitat is having a profound impact on their long-term survival.

In both urban centers and regional areas of Victoria, road trauma is the leading cause of death for koalas, a direct result of fragmented habitats.

To date, there has been no government intervention to address this issue.

As the human population grows and urban sprawl continues, this problem is likely to worsen.

According to DEECA’s 2020 Net Gain report, published in 2022, Victoria loses approximately 10,380 hectares of native vegetation from private land each year.

Due to a flawed offset vegetation system, these native trees are rarely replaced at the sites from which they were removed.

As a result, koala habitats are steadily depleted, forcing koalas to travel farther in search of new habitats, increasing their vulnerability to car strikes and dog attacks.

The Koala Alliance is working with organizations across Victoria to better understand the areas where road trauma is most threatening to koala populations.

We are committed to collecting data an d advocating for intervention strategies to reduce the death toll on Victorian roads.

Koala Protection and Conservation Priorities

The Koala Alliance has developed a comprehensive list of priority actions for a new Australian government. While this list may not address every single threat to koalas, the Alliance believe these actions are essential for immediate protection and to prevent further population decline.
